02 transmission problems

OK so the wifes car drives ok with a little hard shifting going forward, but reverse doesnt work. goes into gear but barely moves when you step on the gas. My question is. Does the solenoid pack on this a604 control reverse?? I dont want to spend the money on the dang thing and not know....:banghead:
