2002 Park Avenue Service Engine Soon Light

The "service engine soon" light came on yesterday and has not gone out. Also, the air bag light stays on. These lights came on simultaneously and are staying on. It runs perfectly. This morning I checked the codes with the reader thinking there must be a code or 2, but it says there are no codes. The car just turned over 114,000 miles. Does anyone have any ideas on what I might check next? Is there a way to reset the lights? Normally, I would reset the light using the OBD II reader, but since there are no codes, the reset does nothing. Thanks for any input.

I believe there is a short due to wet wiring. It has rained about 7 inches here over the past week. It poured yesterday when I was driving on the highway. I later noticed about a half inch of water on the floor in the back, passenger side. Water is coming in from underneath the car. I believe it is somehow shorting the wiring under the front passenger seat or under the back seat. I pulled the back seat out and there is standing water under the fuse box and module (not sure what the module is). I shop vac'd the carpet. I removed a rubber plug under the back seat and water ran out. I'll have to see if I can get it sealed up from underneath today. Not sure where it is coming in. May be I can run a hair dryer on the wiring to dry things out. I had O'Reilly's check for codes and they did not get any codes either. They thought it must be short of some sort.

Wow. Seems to be leaking up front and maybe running all of the way to the back on the right side. I believe rain was leaking in around where the ac drain tube runs through the floor/firewall. The tube dumps out facing forward. I did not have the ac on yesterday. I can barely see the drain tube from underneath. The carpet is wet all around under the plastic meets the firewall. It may be leaking around the door as well. Turned out to be a big mess. I had to cut out the rear carpet on the right side. The foam beneath is like a giant sponge. It weighs about 20 lbs. Had to drill holes to drain it all out. The wiring was submerged in water. There are about 50 wires that run to under the rear seat. I adjusted the doors to pull them in tighter. It may be difficult to get this leak stopped. There is quite a bit of rust under the carpet. Dried it all out, but the lights are still on. The front passenger seat may have to come out eventually.

You mentioned " the air bag light stays on". Is the SRS/airbag control unit under the passenger seat (under the carpet) ? I would think these are sealed well but maybe your's got soaked. Maybe why the airbag light is on. Just a thought.

I bet you are right. There is quite a bit of wiring under the right front seat, including some sort of unit or box. All of this was submerged. I ran a hairdryer in there and thought that may do the trick, but the lights still come on at start up. After things dry out more, the lights may reset. I have a narrow board under the carpet creating a gap to let air in. I'll have to watch it for the time being. At least the water will drain out if necessary. There may be more rain here tomorrow, so I'll see how it does. The section of rear carpet is in the basement. It will be a long time before it dries out.

Do you have a sunroof? If so, it might be a drain problem where the tubes go through the A pillar and through the floor. Many H-body Bonnevilles have had trouble with the tubes cracked, broken, and leaking inside the car instead of draining on through beneath the front floor.

Bummer on the leak.
The box you mentioned should have a bright Yellow sticker "Caution airbag module" on it and a bright yellow connector. THe system is an "all or nothing" system. Its working or it isn't . If the light is on its not working.
The module is not serviceable and if by some chance water entered into the module and shorted the system the module will need to be replaced. You can try letting it dry, but more than likely if it was damaged it will not work no matter how dry.

Not to worry much, these can be replaced easily. You can get a replacemant at a salvage yard (a reliable parts salvage operation not just a crusher place) for about $40.00. The female connector (bright yellow cable) should be cleaned with an electrical contact cleaner and completely dried. Coulpe of bolts and its back in place.
Good luck!

It doesn't have a sunroof. There was no visible water on the door, or coming from above in the car, so the water must be getting in beneath the door, or through the floor up front--not really sure. I don't believe it had been getting wet when just sitting in the rain (not that I know of), so I tend to think the water was getting forced through near the firewall, where the little ac drain hose is located. I thought I would try disconnecting the battery to see if the lights will reset. The check engine light is on too. I believe water may be shorting the lights on. Something is likely still wet. It could possibly be just a light problem. If we get some hot days and things dry out, the lights may go out.

if it's not the $40.00 module try to see if the tps bolts are tight it will make the check engine lite stay on it will not go out it also may need replaced. but i think he's right on the module with all that water.

I disconnected the battery. This shut off the service engine soon light, but the air bag light is still coming on. It blinks 3 or 4 times and then stays on. I'll give it a few more days to dry out.

Started the car this morning and the air bag light was off, so no air bag light or service engine soon light. Things finally dried out well enough.

Thats great! If that light is out, the SRS is working. Guess those are sealed pretty well. Good luck on finding the leak.

have you looked in the trunk lately? my 2000 pa leaked in to the spare tire well and if it is raining that much where you live it could be filling up enough to run in to the car.

I haven't looked in the trunk, but I will. It is raining here again and is supposed to continue into Friday.
