New Alternator - which one?

This morning I hopped in my 99 'Hoe and fired it up, low and behold my battery light is on and my volt meter is only reading 10 volts or so.

Worked fine yesterday on my way home from work, but you know how that goes...

Made a few calls (NAPA, Autozone) and found prices from $120 to $275 105A, 124A, and 140A 175A, reman to new...

It's a 99 OBS, 5.7l, 4wd, p/d, p/w, p/l, rear ac, etc.

I'd like to upgrade from what I have now, but I don't really know what amperage my current alt is... If there an easy way to tell, anyone have an idea?

There is an amperage stamp on the case of the alternator. Sometimes it is right on top sometimes the alt has to be removed. In either case sometimes you have to use a little fine sand paper to make the marking a little more clear.

I think the plugs are different for the different sizes and the mounts may be a little different also so upgrading may not be as easy as just bolting a bigger one in. The 140 amp is pretty obvious since it has a cooling fan right behind the pulley. The 105 amp is the most common.

advance auto has a new alternator with a lifetime warrantee for about 180.00 ...If you plan on keeping the vehicle a few years get this one ...the rebuilt ones have many issues ///too many issues ....

like previously stated install what was there...
never install a new /rebuit alternator with a dead / low charged battery ...I would recharge battery then have it load tested just in case you might have a shorted cell[s].................

before doing anything clean all connections who knows it could be a bad connection/ground/cable corroded etc.....
