I borrowed my mother's 87 Monte. I tried to plug in my accessory adapter and when I did I blew something. The stereo quit working and so did the horn. I called mom to ask if any of it had been out before I got the car and she said the only thing that didn't work was the lighter/accessory. I have pulled every fuse from the box under the steering column and they are all good. I checked the fuse under the hood inline from the battery - good. I pulled the stereo and checked the fuse in the back of it - good. It is an Alpine stereo that she just had installed 3 years ago. I'm thinking I didn't just blow the stereo because the horn isn't working now and she said it was working when she dropped the car off. There has got to be another fuse somewhere that I am missing but I don't know where to look. I even checked the fuse in the box in the trunk and it was fine. Sorry, I don't know if it is an equalizer or an amplifier that is in the trunk. But anyway, any ideas as to what I did to cause the stereo and horn to no longer work when plugging my accessory adapter into the cigarette lighter? Much thanks in advance.

Well I know with my 87 SS I blow the fuse for the cigarette lighter accessory all the time, however I have an original stereo in mine so I always know when it blows because the stereo memory stops working(everytime I shut the car off the clock resets and so does my radio favorites). Their both connected. It's a 20 amp fuse under the column it doesn't say radio which is a 10 amp fuse its above that one i forget what it says I think it says like cgl- something else. But if you're saying all of the fuses are good than I'm not sure. What did u plug into the accessory?

Hi KnoXEmpire,
It was a fuse under the dash and it wasn't labeled radio. I don't remember what it was labeled. I had 3 different people check those fuses and everyone told me they were all good. When I finally got down there I pulled every single one till I found the one that was shot. Replaced it and everything went back to normal.
I had tried to plug in my cell phone charger. I have an accessory splitter so I can run my radar detector and still have an opening for either my cell charger or my gps. I think the fuse in the splitter was shot and that was why the fuse in the car blew. I replaced the fuse in both but never tried to use the splitter in there again because I didn't trust it after that.
Now the car is back to my mom and I have had the splitter back in my car and it's working fine. It was so weird though when we were working on it. It took us like 2 weeks to figure it out.
Thank you for the sugestion though,
Jessica

Yeah no problem glad to hear you got it working, I blow that one all the time never with an accessory but always when I try to use it to light a cigarette... go figure. I couldn't figure out why they used a 20 amp fuse for three different things, my dad who's a gm mechanic said its stupid but thats how they did it those years.

You know, that's weird because the lighter doesn't work in my mom Monte. She said it never did. I always used her accessory for my radar detector. I wonder if the lighter itself didn't work and she thought the accessory didn't work. I told her I used it and she said she didn't know how I used it when it didn't work. I will have to ask her again if it is still not working or if she has even tried it. She just pulled the Monte out of storage about a week ago.
