Hello,

here is my next project.
Its my first Protar and im a little bit nerveus about the fitting of the parts! :runaround:
I bought it from a guy at the www.modellboard.net (http://www.modellboard.net) forum.It was really,really cheap.Thanks a lot to them!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3937363939343466.jpg

I removed all the red paint from the parts. The paint was really thick and i had fear that there all details are loosing.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3266353566626232.jpg

Just fitting the cockpit part.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6334656164663334.jpg

You can see that the rivets are not so good build.I think th epaint is going to remove the sharpness. So i decided to use real rivets like my Honda Ra.
The metal is really thick and i use a 0,5mm drill.I must be very patiently with it.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3439373161346461.jpg

The engine is allmost build from th eguy i bought it.Its ok.I only remove the parts that not glued and will paint it with filler.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3863613665366431.jpg

Take a look inside the box. Many parts are falling around, but i think its all there. :smokin:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3530326434383136.jpg

This is one of the things that i dont like!
The enginecovers are made with a outside hinge!
Thats crap!
I will change it,i still dont know how,but i change it!

Today i bought at a hardwareshop sparycans for the red parts.
I will test it at the time and than i see if its ok or not.

Enough for now,i will go on with the work!

best regards
Christian

Nice subject Capri! This kit is super rare and much more challenging than any Tamiya kit. (Probably why the last guy gave up.)

The outside piano hinge on the engine covers is correct but way way way out of scale unfortunately. I haven't started my kit yet but figured to replace it with hypodermic tube and fine wire. It's going to be difficult to paint without it chipping off too. On the positive side, your castings look sharp. Some of these kits have engine covers with short-shot louvers that are practically impossible to repair.

Another thing I thought of doing is to replace all the brown plastic parts with real basswood. That would really add a lot.

Have you found any good photo's of the real car? I understand it was destroyed.

Hi,

most pics i found shows models from the car.Only 3-4 pics in black&white from the original car.
On that original pics are no piano hinge on the outside.
Do you have some pics from that?
I also thought about to replace that woodsticker inside the cockpit.Maybee i use real wood. But till that point ist a long way to go.

If you have some pice from that hinge, please send it to.

Hello,

i got this picture at home.
My thought was that the piano hinge was not there.I mean that that gap comes from the fitting thats not correct.

I dont know how i can say it.My english is limited.

I really think that the hinge is inside the car.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3464623534653434.jpg

Maybee your are right. What kond of material will you use for the hinge?
I think about to clue on of the hoods and made only one the open.

Hi Capri, I made this kit some 25 years ago and it fitted together very well and is now sat in my Dads lounge still looking good. The hinge is correct and looks fine when finished, some of the moving parts could do with scratch made replacements. You will see what I mean later in your build.
Good Luck,
Lee

Hi Christian,

Did you look at Dieter Knupfer for his fine hinges?

Hi Christian,

Did you look at Dieter Knupfer for his fine hinges?

Ton

Yes,i am a good customer of his great work. :1:
He has good hinges, but no piano hinge that i found there?
I think i take a normal hinge inside and close the ohter side.

But one thing is shure. The Protar hinge is not the correct size.

You are right! But I have seen them somewhere :)

Looking at the picture CrateCruncher posted above i'd say the piano hinge is on the outside. There's this thin round looking line running along the centre line of the bonnet....!?
Have you considered doing the hinge from scratch? I think it should be doable with some 0,1mm sheet of brass or nickel silver and an appropriately sized wire.

Capri-Schorsch
04-01-2010, 04:07 PM
Wow,i dont think that a 0,1mm brass has enough power to hold the 2 hoods.
They are realy heavy.

Im not shure what im going to do.
If anyone knows a shop who has a very small hinge, please let me know.

Maybee i will use this for the hinge?

But now i will say bye.Im the next 3 days in holiday.

Love they way the driver casually has his arm resting on the exhaust heat shield. The original Bentley Boy, Henry 'Tim' Birkin died from burning his arm on a exhaust like this...nutters!

You could glue several of these in a row with only one rod to keep them together

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3464316263303132.jpg

A dry fitting show me that the chassis and the body are fit well.
I sanded the hinge and now im in a thinking process of how i can put it inside?

I just made the interieur with real wood instead of the plasticsticker.
A few rivets and the interieur is finished.

More this week.

Hi,

today was a color day.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6239316431386538.jpg

The rivets also become some color.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3738643730656466.jpg

The springs are ready and the rest of the chassis also ready.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3135343561643765.jpg

Only the Fiat engine still needs some work and details.

Here it goes........

If made the engine and took some weathering paint from Tamiya on it.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3866643137636138.jpg

The chassis is now finished.I take Top Coat Semigloss and sprayed 3 layers on it.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3036373434626532.jpg

The most difficult thing was the starting number on the hood.
Protar give some templates to spray the number on it.But those stickers are much to thick and they dont look good.
So i made it with a white Eddingpen. The rest was made with a stencil per hand.
It looks not so good that i wanted to look, but its ok for now.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3762653038353861.jpg

The engine and the chassis are only lay on it,thats the reason it looks very buckled.

They are much to big and dont look very well.

Little progress....

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3432646566623530.jpg

Glue the tank in it and put a cabel on.Meanwhile i think the cable is not thick enough, but later is it unvisible. So who cares?

The frontcooler without the cooler.

All the stuff from above.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3165373664663931.jpg

The enigine is complete and still waiting for her first start.
The next step will be the frontsuspension and the rims.
First i thought of using selfmade rims, but i think im not able to make rims who lokks good enough.
So i will use the Protar ones. The look not so cool, but good enough.

After Vettel lost the race,i start a little progress on the Fiat.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3938663038616432.jpg

The cooler is now finished.I put real screws from www.knupfershop.de in it and i think they look really cool.
The frontsuspension is about 95% ready, theres only a few screws to put on.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3433633336336532.jpg

Hello,

today was the wedding between engine and the chassis.

Was a lot of work to fit them together!
It took me a while and i had some parts who dont want to fit togehter.Just a lot of scratch part to made.

But finally here are the pics.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3735313135393235.jpg

Next step will bethe metallparts from the body.I saw 4 screws where i dont know how to set a screwdriver on?
I think the only way is to glue them on the chassis.
Well,i see when i get more inspiration.

Just a little step forward.

I add a cotter( dont if this the right word?) to the central-locking of the rims.
I dont know if they are also on the real car,but there was some holes in it. The only thing that come in my mind to do with the holes was to made some cotters.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/6239363433336334.jpg

The seat was made with MFH leather and i add some screws from Knupfer.de

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/73/3980473/3064356237303337.jpg

Next step will be the exhaust, but theres a lot of work to do.Next time more from that.
