I just got an Eighty-Eight Royale. Love the car...so far its gone 280 some miles on the tank (more then i can say for my old cavalier) and i definately enjoy driving the beast. I got it from my grandparents, so its in perfect condition. Just one question...is there any quirks that you guys have had (since yours all have more miles then mine--113,000)? Mines ok, but it really thunks hard when i put it in reverse. Its probably just me because im used to driving a manual transmission.

Ok, thanks. Its kinda nice to have other people helping out. I just wish these forums were as big as the TDR forums are...more support. Back on topic, the tranny does seem to take a bit of a long time to get in gear, but im thinking that i may just be rushing it (shifting+gas).

Welcome to AF man, I have an 89 delta 88 Royale 2 door and I know what you are talking about when you put it into reverse. It sometimes does that on mine, and my dad says it's nothing to worry about usually, unless it affects the way your vehicle drives. Im wanting to get mine painted here in the future too:D

I've got a 1996 Olds eighty eight. I've got 136,000 miles on mine. Only had to replace the MAF sensor. Just keep up normal maintenance. Oil changes every 3000 miles, etc. Haven't had any tranny problems.

Thanks alot guys, youve been a real help. The thunking/stalling isnt something im used to, and im still learning the car. I have a friend with the samer year and model as I have (1989 Olds 88 Sedan) and his transmission has the same quirks as mine, the reverse deal and sometimes when we put it in drive it waits a sec, then goes into drive (sometimes chirping the wheels) but ive just taken it as normal behavior and adjusted my driving to suit it. Thanks again for the replies. Theyve been a real help.

hey..
i have a 79 delta 88 coupe.. I have th exact tranny problem as you do.. when i put it in D or R from N it kinda kicks in and shakes the car...
but otherwise i got no tranny problems when driving...

I like my car..I had to change the ignition module once.. i think you should check yours and put heat insulator grease under it just incase..cause if there isn't any it'll just fry the module...

Today i drained the radiator and tomorrow i'll fill it up with fresh AF/coolent...
My car definitely needs a new paint.. i guess i'll just do it myself with spray cans...

Other than that i love the car..even though people call it a land boat and make fun of it...

enjoy your car

the fact that your trannys are hesittating is a drivability problem to begin with and is sign that your trany is going out....as for what it is it could be a number of things from the lack of changing the fluid and filter or damage to the hard parts themselves
one common and posiblity is the overdrive one way clutch if its hesitating to gointo drive or the reverse oneway clutch if hesitating to go into revers..... as for cluncing pop the hood and have some one watch the engine it it moves more than half an inch whene placed into iether drive or revers with the engine running you probably have motor mounts or tranny mounts that have gone bad and as they may not couse driveabillity problems the will couse other things to be in a bind such as cv gionts and your rack and pinion steering and not to mention the engine and tranny wireing ... do not let them just go becouse the car still drive it will cost a lot more down the road.............http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/811673ase_logo.jpg

I have a 1982 delta88 royale, has 170,00 on it and it runs great, no knocks no nothing. Only real suggestion is to keep the oil changed regularly and keep an eye on the water pump and timing chain as you put more miles on it. as for the tranny every one is right get it checked out before it turns into a real ugly problem and you get stranded. have fun with your car and be nice to it and it will be nice to you.

Ask grandaddy when he last changed the trans filter and fluid. Changing is overlooked too often.

Mine does something like that. It sounds like its ganna stall and sometimes it does...
