After seeing Loeb05's post for the 2005 Lancer WRC I figured I'd finally get my first WIP on this forum. I started work on this car almost a year ago now, so this will be quite a long first post .
As the post-title already suggest this will be the 2005 Deutschland Rallye Mitsubishi Lancer WRC as driven by Gigi Galli to a fine 5th place. Here's a picture of the car as I'm going to build it:
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/galli_2005_deutschland.jpg
I wanted to not just build the model, but redo the interior to make it more like the real thing. So I've been looking for pictures of the interior as reference for quitea while before starting. (I've put these images on my website as well, see sig for URL). This magazine was a real help as well:
http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10095/snk020box.gif
The pictures:
1. Old nose cut off:

2. Dry-fit of the new nose:

3. The new nose in place and the body in primer:

4. First modifications of the bottom: The middle section has been drastically changed as it's completely wrong in shape:

5. The center again, but now filled up with putty and sanded down.

6. The rollcage heavily modified. Basically only the 2 sides have been partly kept as well as the top bar aft. Everything else has been scratched with evergreen.

7. dry-fit of the rollcage on the chassis:

8. Dry-fit with some more parts. The fuel-tank has been mostly scratched as well.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_13.jpg
9+10+11: modified the front wheel arch so you won't be able to see it peeking out anymore (see 11). Basically cut off the whole front part and replaced it with thin evergreen sheet (bends easily).

12. removed the monitor from the dashboard and scratch-build a new one (made green in photoshop so it stands out)
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_19.jpg
13. Scratch-build the pedal-box as well.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_20.jpg
14. Overview of the chassis with all the scratch-build items in it.
green: pedal-box.
red: this is an original part from the box, but shortened to fit between the front end of the roll-cage and the seat.
dark blue: electronics box.
yellow: another electronis box.
light blue: new covers for the suspension tops. Made from evergreen.
purple: fuel tank.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_21.jpg
That's it for now. As I'm not really a fast builder the next update could be a while... perhaps working on 3 models at a time doesn't help either ;)
Next step is to sand everything down nicely and then start thinking about the wiring....:screwy:
thanks for looking!

Wow! Another one of these! This is awsome :D
Nice work so far by the way :)
I've started on mine too and there is alot more modifications that has to be done than I first thought. Except for the changes you've made so far I'll have to change suspension and brakes and have another set of wheels on mine to make it look like the Swedish Rally version.
I look forward to seeing more progress on this one :)

Dear TIM
I would like thank you this report. Problem with wheel arc you show on picture 11 is exactly where I was blocked :banghead: , so I will use your experience .
Thank you again, and congratulations for your work up to now. I will be expectant of your progress.

Very good work as well !
I forgot to modify the rollcage but I work to modidy the interior too.
I saw that you had remark that Galli didn't use the same seat as his copilot. ;)
Unconfortable for him maybe ??
Good continuation for your model

After a long time not doing anything on this model I finally took it off the shelf again.
Did some work on the underside, rerouting the last part of the exhaust. This had to be done as I also repositioned the cut-out in the bumper. From the green arrow to the end is now a metal tube. I also added cigarette-foil.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_24.jpg
Then I scratchbuild the underside-protection from plastic card. It's probably 100% correct, but I didn't find any clear pictures of this part of the car.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_22.jpg
Next I made the brake discs from the transkit. They're basically white metal parts with a PE front. I only need to add the "Brembo"-decals.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_25.jpg
I also started on finishing the dashboard. The top side was covered with embossing powder and the front side with CF from SMS. The CF was then sprayed with Tamiya X19 Smoke. I dryfitted it into the rollcage for the picture:
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_26.jpg
And last, but not least, I detailed some interior parts. The 2 footrests and the base for the shifter were covered with CF from SMS and sprayed with smoke. I then added anti-slip material to parts of the footrests (basically tamiya tape painted flat black and treated them with the weathering set "A".

Comments welcome!

Great work Tim.
If you have a copy of Pirelli World Rallying 2005-2006 , page 72 shows the underside. Not sure if the rear of the front guard flares back out. If it does it is a straight line.
The rear has the soft guards on some events covering the suspension arms between the diff and the wheels. In this particular shot they are not there, but other shots do show them drooping down.

Hi Tim
You show some impressive work on this car. I'll be following your progress closely as I have this kit in my to do pile.
Concerning the underside of this car. I did find one sort-of usable picture. But I wouldn't be surprised if you already have it. And you'll still have to use your imagination (a lot)
It's picture #29 at the following link:
http://www.ewrc.cz/ewrc/fotogalery.php?events=110&fotograf=2&all=1
I hope that your next update will be a bit sooner...:naughty:

Hi Sebastian
Studio 27 has made 2 transkits for the Tamiya Evo VII WRC car.
The first transkit (which TvD is using) is for the Monaco 2005 version (Panizzi and Rovanpera) or the Germany 2005 version (Galli).
The other transkit has been released some time later and contains the same parts as the first one, but has different decals (Gigi Galli, Monaco 2006)
Here's a link to the 2006 transkit:
http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1203
The first transkit is out of production and very hard to find.
I recently bought one at the Domino webstore (Belgium) :
http://www.modelkits.be/main.php?action=productenmodelbouw&naam=studio_27&categorie=3&categorienaam=Rally%20Cars&pagina=3
They have still stock of both transkits (STU TK2433C and 2434C).

I managed to do some work on the underside of the car. The brakes were attached to the suspension. I also added some weathering to the exhaust using Tamiya weathering set D and overall to get a dirty look with other sets. Sadly most of this won't be visible after I add the guards. (all parts are dry-fitted btw).

http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_29.jpg
I also did some work on the inside. The sides were altered as they don't look like the real thing. In the picture below you'll see what I "fixed". The rear doorhandle was sawn out and transferred to the front door. All black parts still have to be CF-ed.

Finally an update to this build.
The interior is now almost done. I've basically got everything I wanted in there:
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_31.jpg
A view of some of the scratchbuild parts:
#1: this represents the rear-diff-cooler. It was made for me by a fellow modeller.
#2: custom build electronics-box
#3: another electronics-box; the Mitsubishi logo was made by carving it out of a piece of plastic-card.
http://forum.depaddock.eu/attachment.php?attachmentid=11714&stc=1&d=1225624078
A close up of the two seats:
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_33.jpg
The dashboard and steering wheel are ready as well. I only have to glue the steering wheel.
http://photos.keepturningleft.com/albums/1_24/lancer_wrc05/lancerwrc_34.jpg
And finally everything dry-fitted including the roll cage. I still have to do the seat-belts and the spare-wheel hasn't been painted yet.

I agree with jla.
It's nice to see some updates in this thread. I too have several kits of the Lancer WRC still to build. So I'm a bit anxious to see this one finished.
There are some excellent hints here that I'm hoping to use in my own builds.

Nice job man, what are you using for belt material? They look likey the conform very well to the seats.
It's called "Gold Zack" and is a kind of self-adhesive nylon to repair umbrella's, tents, etc. The stuff looks and feels a lot like the fabric Studio27 uses for it's seatbelts. Every pack has a piece of about 10 by 20 cm. It cost me 2 Euro (approx. 2.60 USD) so it's very cheaper considering how much you can get out of it.
On the package there is also the website of the people who make this stuff: www.prym-consumer.com (http://www.prym-consumer.com/).

The interior is almost ready now. I just added some intercom-connectors to the seats to finish it off.

Next, I glued the dashboard in place and mated the roll-cage to the chassis.
The result can be seen in the 4 pictures below. Only things to do for the interior are the spare-wheel in the trunk and putting in the inside of the doors.
Enjoy!

You did a very, very nice job on the cockpit, I especially like the neatness of the seat belts assembly. Bravo !!!
