EGR Valve Location

my 1999 GA has been throwing the codes P0404 and P0172. It has the 2.4L. i was wondering where the EGR valve was located so i can check it and possibly replace. Autozone gave me a price of $162 for replacement.

The EGR is located off the side of the intake. Close to the exhaust manifold.
You'll have to remove the air intake tube around the TB to see it.

Disconnect the elec connector from the EGR.
-Using a voltmeter Probe terminal #1 on the electrical connector with the positive (on the harness side),
and apply the ground to the engine.
-Turn the key on, On the V6 battery voltage should be present,
if not check the curciuts(wiring) from the PCM to the EGR.
- If the curcuits are good have the PCM checked by a dealer.
On 4 cyl models battery voltage will only be present when the PCM is controling the EGR.

- With plug in still disconnected,
probe # 4 with the posistive,
and connect the ground to # 2.
- Turn on the key, you should read approx 5 volts.
- If not check the wiring,
if they are good same as above, contact a dealer.

-- To test the EGR valve,
use an Ohm meter to check for continuity of the EGR valve position and Egr solenoid coil.
- Check terminals #2 & #4(EGR sensor),
and acrossed terminals #1 & #5(egr coil sol).
- If either check reveals an open circuit,
replace the EGR valve.

Also you may want to remove the EGR
and see if the port/passages are clogged with carbon.
As this can give you false readings and probly throw the DTCs.

what can i use to clean the ports/passages if they are clogged?

Any Throtle body cleaner would work.
You may need something to dig out big chunks if thier is any.
A screw driver, toothbrush, maybe even a heavy wire can come in handy.
Just try not to scrap any metal as its aluminum and will srcatch easily.

I tested it and one of the circuits is open so now i have to go buy a new one

once you take that EGR off do not forget to try to clean that small EGR passage before you put a new EGR back on. Use something long and flexible that can get inside as much as possible. I was able to get in only about 2", if you have more luck tell me what you used. Also put some seafoam in that small passage and into that big metal pipe towards exhaust pipe and see if you can try to clean that one also. Once you clean it good you will notice how your engine does not get as hot as it used to. (that is if it was cloged like mine).

Are there any problems with aftermarket EGR's? I have a similar problem, and the mechanic says he's had problems with the aftermarket ones, so he only installs dealer specs. $271 for the part.

also the quad didn't get the egr till 96, was dropped again in 99-02
these are simple facts.
from 1988 to 1995 the quad 4 did not have a EGR, the "twin cam" did from 96-99 but was dropped during the final 2.4 redesign in 99 till the end of the 2.4 in 02
don't confuse the 99-02 ld9(2.4) with the eco that did have a egr.
and of course have a nice day:)

It doesnt matter what pic that is,
his 99' had an Egr or it would not of had the EGR DTC.

The LD9 Twin Cam was a 2.4 L Quad 4 variant with balance shafts, debuting in 1996. Bore was decreased from 92 mm to 90 mm and stroke increased from 85 mm to 94 mm for better torque, and power was increased to 150 hp (112 kW). This engine received a minor update halfway through the 1999 model year that eliminated the EGR, increased the compression ratio from 9.5:1 to 9.7:1, and switched from low impedance fuel injectors to high impedance.
