MOPAR MADNESS....A 71 Winged DayClona and 71 Duster...

Yep, stumps been hit by a Mopar madness bug.....

I think I've always been a closset Mopar freak.....Absolutely love some of their late 60's, early 70's cars..... :smokin:
I've had these two planned for a while..well, the DayClona wasn't planned, till I saw an article on them...It was gonna be a stockie....

These are whats responsible for me not doing much else lately, apart from moulding my Aussie Munro pieces, and getting them out, into the world....Not much else is getting done.....

The DayClona was featured recently in a magazine, and I simply, fell in love with it....So, I scratched around, found an old Daytona, and robbed the nessesary bits for the conversion.... :evillol:

With some massageing, the nose will fit nicely, as will the rear wing..

http://images14.fotki.com/v207/photos/6/63306/2567122/71Dayclona005-vi.jpg?800600

I started to graft yhe nose on this afternoon...Still needs a lot of putty work and reshapeing, but its getting there.....

http://images12.fotki.com/v217/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMI6pac1000-vi.jpg?800600

MOPARvation will come from a 472 CI HEMI, mated to a Tremec 5-speed box..I didnt like any of the Tremecs in my stash, so I've added some ribbing to the standard box....It looks reasonably close....

http://images12.fotki.com/v217/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMI6pac-vi.jpg?800600

The 6-pac manifold is the standard 2 x 4, with 3 mounting flanges (from a Chev manifold..) grafted onto it...The carbys are from Perrys Resin. I sliced them in half, to represent 350cfm 2-barrel Holleys...I also modded the air cleaner assembly, so it sits over the set-up, AND, the hood still closes... Happy about that.....LOL...

http://images12.fotki.com/v216/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMI6pac011-vi.jpg?800600

http://images14.fotki.com/v225/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMI6pac1003-vi.jpg?800600

Also started on my 71 Duster.....So far, I've only messed with the manifold....It's carb plate, just looked wrong.... :uhoh: It was a weird shape, and looked like the carby needed to be "L" shaped.....So I added a side to the opening, and added a flange to the top....

Umm, stump, you do realize that MPC made a model kit of the 1971 Road Runner that contained all the pieces parts to create the 2nd generation Superbird, right?

All of this can be easily grafted onto the AMT 1971 Charger as the Charger and Road Runner were on the same platform AND AMT roughly based the body tooling on the older MPC Charger.

Thanks Mate..
Yeah, I've been trying to win one of those beasts too....keep missing out at the last moment......I'm watching this one now.....LOL..
Yeah, I've used the nose section off an older Amt 69 Charger, modified to suit the 71 Charger...Also be using the Amt 69 rear wing...
You may notice, the nose and wing in the first pic are white (Revell) and the nose in the second pic, even though in primer, is the older Amt...

Cheers guys

Mopar, Zlaja, is the OEM parts division for Chrysler Corporation; formerly known as Direct Connection. They offer stock replacement and performance parts for Chrysler cars.

People use the term "Mopar" as a generalistic term when speaking of Chryslers, Plymouths, or Dodges.

Mopar did offer spare parts for other brands as well if I'm not mistaking and it's short for MOtorPARts if the memory serves me right. But if somebody knows this to be wrong, please correct me.

Thanks guys.

Been doing a little work on this puppy....
The front is fully molded now. Because of all the filing, sanding and filling, the chrome trim on the front wheel arch needed to be extended, towards the leading lower edge....
To make it look better, I sanded off all the original trim, and added a complete new trim from plastic sheet stock. Looks ok, I think.

An overall shot, with the first guide coat of primer....I've since added the rear wing struts, modified the hood and made the second foil for the wing....... I'll try and get pix tomorrow arvo....

Well, back at the bench.... :uhoh:

The hood has been modified, so it now matches the opening at the front,..I've also thinned the rear edge of the hood, to allow room for the seperate wipers that'll be added later.....
The vents at the rear were also openned up, which was easy, once it was thinned enough....I had some p/etch vents left over from my Chevelle (it got a cowled hood), so I added these on the underside.....

http://images12.fotki.com/v216/photos/6/63306/2567122/CWestR34andHEMI010-vi.jpg?800600

http://images14.fotki.com/v220/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMICharger023-vi.jpg?800600

Also, set about making the slide-away sun roof......Interesting...This is my first attempt at one, so I hope it works out.....LOL
I drew out the size I wanted first, then carefully scribed each side, till it vertually fell out...

http://images14.fotki.com/v223/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMICharger003-vi.jpg?800600

On the real car, the corners are rounded, so I glued in some scrap pieces, puttied them, and will round them all out.....

http://images12.fotki.com/v216/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMICharger007-vi.jpg?800600

Also, got the wing struts mounted, and made the two foils from sheet stock..The lower one will pivot, to allow the boot to open, just like the full size 1:1 car......Hope it works like it's supposed to.....LOL

looks awsome so far. I guess you read the Hot Rod magazine article about the car. You must be doing the white car. which was my favorite out of the bunch BTW.

I'm gonna replicate the same car. but not to the detail that your going.

Very simple, Steve. A "DayClona" is the nickname given to clones of the Charger Daytona/Road Runner Superbird that was never put into production - the 1971 model.

You see, Ford and Chrysler were actually hard at work on their entries for the 1971 NASCAR season and were hellbent on continuing the 1968-1970 "Aero Wars".

Ford had found that their new Torino Cobra was inferior on the superspeedways to the outgoing Torino Talladega, and its sibling the Mercury Cyclone was equally ineffective compared to the old Cyclone Spoiler. So, during development, Ford constructed the prototype Torino King Cobra and Cyclone Super Spoiler to improve superspeedway aerodynamics (and wrench back their championship crown from nemesis Chrysler).

http://www.torinocobra.com/images/king_cobra_orange1.jpg

Torino King Cobra

http://www.torinocobra.com/images/Super_Spoiler_II_5.jpg

Cyclone Super Spoiler

Of course, Chrysler was also hard at work planning to continue their dominance and as they'd constructed a new generation of Road Runners and Chargers in 1971, they worked to create a new generation of Superbirds and Daytonas.

However, NASCAR brought the hammer down on the aero cars in 1971 saying "You can run a big block in a regular car, or you can run a small block in an aero car."

Everyone kept their big blocks, and the aero programs were scrapped. The King Cobra, Super Spoiler, and 2nd generation Superbird and Daytona never made it to production. However, fans of the aero wars and of the cars have reproduced the bodyparts necessary to convert a Torino/Cyclone or Charger/Road Runner into its aero wars compatriot. The nickname for the Chrysler versions of these clones is DayClona.

Gasman, yep. She's going to be the white one, my favourite too.

LK, thats one of the best explanations for the aero-wars I've seen.
Thanks mate.

Ok, been a bit happening since my last visit...
The body is just waiting on some gloss white paint to arive, plus a photo-etch set I have coming... :smokin:

http://images15.fotki.com/v10/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMIbodychassis014-vi.jpg?800600

The sliding sun-roof is also done....Fun that was......NOT !!... :banghead:

http://images14.fotki.com/v222/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMIroof007-vi.jpg?800600

Been getting emails from Gary from G-Series (DayClona) with lots of great reference pics..He is the nicest bloke, hey.

The chassis has connecting rails, joining the front chassis clip to the rear chassis rails. I had to make these from "L" section rod, adding an extra side, to make it "C" channel. I also added small bolt detail from hex rod. Adds to the detail...

http://images12.fotki.com/v217/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMIbodychassisInt011-vi.jpg?800600

Also made a start on the interior.
Now, the kit supplied front set is close..but not close enough for me.

http://images14.fotki.com/v221/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMIbodychassisInt002-vi.jpg?800600

The real car id fitted with the "buddy" set option, so I cut up the front, into three pieces, filled the gaps left from the cut, amd re-manufactured the centre section, so that it folds down...

http://images15.fotki.com/v11/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMIbodychassisInt005-vi.jpg?800600
http://images14.fotki.com/v220/photos/6/63306/2567122/HEMIbodychassisInt007-vi.jpg?800600

The centre sits over the tunnel as it should, and I think it looks better.

I have the MPC body from the Superbird version, and finally started working on it this year. MPC was going to do the annuals for 71, but when NASCAR pulled the plug on 1/1 scale, They were left holding the bag, so they released it anyway. I'm using the chassis from the AMT '71 Charger, and building mine slightly custom, still many choices to make down the road, but here's what I have now. Will be going with a yellow color that has just a slight touch of orange, and probably some Crager SS or something instead of factory rims.
