From what I've seen, Sunfires aren't worth it: I test drove one last year, and it skipped third gear (wasn't even 6 years old). I'd go with a mid 90's Honda Civic. I just got mine, it's a 98 4dr with 90,000 miles for 2 grand. Granted, it needs some work, but civics are generally good quality and they last forever.

Yeah, you can find a nice 1992-1995 Honda Civic 2-door for under four grand.

a Sunfire GT is a superior performance car to an old civic. There aren't many reliability problems unless it was poorly maintained.

Okay, the Sunfire may be a better performer in terms of horsepower, but the civic will have lower insurance rates, even if it will be a little bit more expensive. Go out and get Consumer Reports' latest edition of the Used Car Guide, and you can check reliability on all used cars... you'll notice all of the problem areas on all of the cars listed.

The civic will be more expensive to insure because its one of the most stolen cars in the country.

Well, I just checked online at Progressive.com, and their quote for me for my civic sedan is 1264 per year, and for the exact same policy for me for the Sunfire GT is 2104 per year. It's a two-door, sporty car... which will obviously have higher insurance...

it depends on where you live and your driving lesson. If you live in a bad neighborhood and have a good record then theft will be a bigger factor in price. If you live in a good neighborhood with the car in the garage, then performance will be a bigger factor.
