does anyone know how to make a 1994 altima faster for free. (EX. my friend told me to take off the box that holds the air filter and that i would see a very small piece with a small hole in it. then he told me to remove that and that it would allow for more air flow and a 5hp increase.) does anyone know any more ways to tweak an altima?

That would be a very bad, bad idea. Or rather, it IS a very bad idea.

If you want to do something to make it run faster, you will have to spend money.

But first you should spend money on getting things done that will help it keep running like it should and give you good service and not leave you stranded without wheels.

Items like:

Changing the oil and oil filter every 3000 to 5000 miles and using good name brand oil and filter.

Flushing and having your tranny refilled with new fluid. New tranny filter if its an automatic.

Flushing and refill for your brakes and if its a manual, flushing the clutch system and refilling.

Keeping a clean air filter installed in that Box you mentioned.

Replacing the sparkplugs every 25 to 30 miles. Use OEM plugs.
Replacing the sparkplug wires, distributor cap and rotor at about the
same milage.

Have your brakes inspected and new pads and/or shoes installed and the rotors turned if really needed.

Have your exaust system inspected for leaks and restrictions (this includes the cat. which can become clogged up and restrict your exaust flow).

Have a warm air intake or cold air intake installed for a little extra pick up. Just be advised that to replace the filter it will cost you much more than the stock on you are now using.

Have your timing checked and set if necessary by someone who knows how (you have to disconnect a sensor). Don't advance it more than one or two degrees from stock setting. If its newer than 1997 keep it on stock, because the computer will just compensate for any change you make anyway.

While I'm at it, keep the correct air pressure in your tires for safety and also for gas mileage.

Read your owners manual for anything I have missed. If you don't have one get one. If you plan on doing work on your own car, get a service manual also. Take a repair course at your local community college. Working on cars is a blast but it requires a person that is pretty smart and willing to do a lot of learning.

If you do all of above and do them at regular intervals, you will have a faster, better running and more reliable car.

ok.. simply put, "you get what you pay for" so if ur looking for free mods, kiss ur car good bye. now if your looking for low cost tunning then i can help but it all depends on ur commitment level and seriousness of 2ning. No joke, tampering with ur car can kill you so never cut corners doing sumtin you don't know very much about, like those electric "superchargers" that were $20 on ebay... cheaply made fans had cheap plastic fan blades that broke off and got sucked into the engine... now he needs to get a new engine.
low cost and safe for the ka24de....
-intake, foam or cloth, cone intake filter are the cheapest and most fool proof mod that adds sum power... maybe $25-$40 for the filter alone...
-new spark plugs/spark plug wires. get a set of NGK irridium plugs, good stuff. never get euro stuff... what do they know about japanese cars?
-use top of the line oil filters and synthetic oil to keep ur car running cooler and smoother.
-make sure the coolant is at a good level..
-hypergrounding works but takes a long time to install... easy power gains cheap too
-and just like paparay said, always make the specified milage tuneups... saves you tons of money in the long run compared to the repairs u make later... i kno from experience...
good luck and if ur serious about adding aftermarket parts... hit me up and i'll help u out...

I agree. There is almost no way to increase HP with out the cost of replacement performance parts. But, there is quite a few budget oriented parts out there that add HP ie; HiFlow air filters like K&N, AirRaid, ect. Cost anywhere from mid 20 to low 100's. depending on how much of the intake system gets replaced. Another way is to upgrade your ignition system with a hi discharge one like Jacobs or MSD. Computer modules, and chips, etc all staying basically under the 300 dollar range. Which at the end all combined will increase not only HP, but MPG also, throttle response, emissions, and not to mention the level of you fun meter :)

i know of one. index your spark plugs. thats always a winner. the theory behind it is that if you face all the spark plugs towards the inlet charge, the spark points the right way, and you get a more complete burn, hence more power.

i was reading about it in a car mag. they did it with a datsun ute (pick up for the americans here) one of those real small ones. it made like a 4 kW at the wheels difference, they did it with an R33 GTS-t (one with a RB25det) and it made like a 6kw difference or something like that.
anyway, its not that impressive, but considering the little datsun only had like 80 kW, thats a pretty big percentage for free.
moral is, the newer the car, the less dramatic the effect.
research on the net dude. you can buy washers of different thicknesses to help, but that wouldn;t be free.
