If you have a gas leak around the engine it could be an injector seal large o-rings.
Napa used to sell them. A leaking injector will cause smoke when starting the vehicle.
A bad fuel pump won't maintain fuel pressure also a bad fuel pressure regulator will cause problems. Pull the vacuum tube for the pressure regulator and check if it runs better.
Go to Advance or Auto Zone and get a loaner pressure gauge and fittings.
Post what fuel pressure your getting. Pull your plugs and check if their sooted up or clean.
